How local guides turn several forecasts into one trip decision
A St. Augustine tide table is a reference, not a description of every creek and shoreline. Outgoing Tide starts with NOAA station 8720576 at City Dock, then treats the inlet, the Intracoastal Waterway, marsh creeks, oyster edges, beaches, and offshore water as different environments. Water can reach each place at a different time, and the strongest current does not necessarily occur at the printed high or low tide.
Wind determines which parts of the system are exposed. A breeze aligned with a protected creek can feel manageable while the same wind crosses open water or opposes current at the inlet. Ocean swell also deserves a separate check: calm water at the ramp does not establish that the inlet, nearshore reef, or offshore route is safe. That is why this dashboard keeps the station name and source beside each value instead of combining everything into a single fishing score.
A practical morning check begins with official warnings and the marine forecast. Next, compare the predicted tide with any available preliminary water-level observation, then read wind direction, gusts, rain, visibility, swell, daylight, and water temperature for the exact route. If sources disagree or live data is unavailable, the conservative choice is to verify conditions directly and shorten, relocate, or postpone the trip.
For example, an outgoing tide may expose oyster edges and concentrate water at creek mouths, but it can also increase shallow-water and inlet risks. The useful question is not simply whether the tide is “good.” It is whether the predicted stage, local timing, wind exposure, route, access, regulations, and safe return window all support the particular trip being planned.
