What major periods represent
The Moon crosses the local meridian at upper transit and reaches the opposite side at lower transit. Solunar systems commonly place longer “major” windows around those events. The displayed window is a convention built around an astronomical time; it is not a measured forecast of fish activity.
What minor periods represent
Minor windows are commonly centered on local moonrise and moonset. They are typically shorter than major windows. Moonrise and moonset depend on date and coordinates, so a table calculated for another location or time zone may be noticeably wrong.
Moon phase and tides are related—but different
Sun–Moon geometry contributes to tidal range. New and full moons are associated with spring tides, which generally have larger ranges; quarter moons are associated with neap tides, which generally have smaller ranges. Local tide timing and height still depend on coastline and basin response, so lunar phase alone cannot tell you the current at a fishing spot.
How strong is the fishing prediction?
Fish behavior is affected by many interacting factors, and a solunar period cannot isolate them. Weather changes, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, prey, spawning behavior, tide movement, pressure, clarity, angling pressure, and habitat can all dominate. Treat a star rating as a planning aid rather than a scientific guarantee.
A responsible way to use solunar periods
- Remove windows with unsafe weather, access, or marine conditions.
- Choose the tide stage that fits the habitat and species.
- Check temperature trend, daylight, and seasonal behavior.
- If two windows remain similar, use a nearby major or minor period as a tie-breaker.
- Record actual activity so local experience can confirm or reject the pattern.
Why times vary among apps
Differences can result from coordinates, time zone handling, daylight saving time, the astronomy library, rounding, and how long each app defines a window. Confirm that the selected location and date are correct. Outgoing Tide calculates the astronomy for the selected station in the browser.
